The main political parties are:
(1) Vanuaaku Party: The ruling coalition. Formerly known as the New Hebrides National Party, it was established in 1971 and is the oldest political party in Vanuatu. In 1977 it was changed to its current name. The party has been in power until 1991 under the leadership of the late Founding Father Walter Linney since its independence in 1980. The Waku Party split in 1991, and Walter Linney left to form the National Coalition Party. In April 1999, the Waku Party and the Communist Party of China formally established inter-party relations, making it the first political party in a Pacific island country to establish inter-party relations with the Chinese Communist Party.
